HTML5 Drupal Themes - Should We or Shouldn't We?

Well, it looks like I've got a choice to make. In my last post, I mentioned that I was currently working on a new starter theme for ThemeShark.com, the base upon which all of our themes will be built for the next few months. Not a starter theme with the bulk of a complete framework, but something a little more straight forward and elegant.

I've got a list of things I'm including or, at least, want to include. First and foremost, I've got responsive , grid based design on my mind, and right now it looks like there's a good chance the Skeleton Boilerplate by Dave Gamache is going to provide an excellent foundation.

But I'm at the point where I need to decide between XHTML and HTML5. After doing some initial tests with pre- existing HTML5 Drupal themes, I was a disappointed to discover something I hadn't already been aware of: HTML5 doesn't get along well with the RDF module.

Does Drupal 7 Really Need Another Framework Theme? Probably Not.

For awhile now I've been thinking about putting together and releasing an official ThemeShark framework . Branded frameworks are very popular within the Wordpress and Joomla premium theme community at the moment , and it seems like all of the big name theme developers have rolled one out at some point. So should ThemeShark do the same for Drupal?

Maybe we should. It could certainly generate interest and bring in some extra business, and it would probably make the updating the themes to the lastest version of Drupal a bit easier. But here's the thing: it seems to me like it'd be a bit redundant at best, and a self-indulgent waste of time at worst. And I'm just not convinced that anyone would really care.

Introducting Blacksea, A Free Drupal 7 Theme

This month ThemeShark.com is giving back to the Drupal 7: we're very pleased to announce the release of our latest free Drupal theme, titled Blacksea. We've come a long way since our first free themes Amity Island and Sandtiger. We think this might be one of the best free Drupal themes now available.

Head on over to the Blacksea product page where the theme pack is available for download. The pack includes the theme, a distributing of Drupal 7 for setting up a replica of the demo site found on ThemeShark.com, a export of the Slideshow view for use with the Views Slideshow module, and a Setup Guide.
